New attendance records were set at the 2004 AHR Expo in Anaheim, at least for a West Coast show. With more than 22,000 registered visitors—not including exhibitor personnel—the ’04 event set a new record, while the number of exhibiting companies (1,652), and net sq. ft. of exhibit space (324,590) also topped previous West Coast records. Counting exhibitor personnel, more than 38,000 HVAC professionals registered.

A special attraction on the show floor was the presentation of the second annual AHR Expo Innovation Awards. York’s SunLine MagnaDry high-efficiency single-package heating and cooling unit won in the cooling category. For energy management, Ice Energy LLC’s IceBear-50, a 50-ton-hr. distributed energy storage product, took the honors. Lindab, Inc. and its SPIRO+AgION line of antimicrobial duct systems won for best IAQ innovation. In the ventilation category, ebm-papst, Inc. won with its line of EC-Giants energy-efficient motors for fans and blowers. For refrigeration, Danfoss, with its Type TN hermetic compressor for CO2refrigerant, was the winner.

Products of interest observed by CSE staff and advisors included Turbocor’s very quiet compressor, which uses magnetic bearings instead of oil. Belimo Aircontrols’ self-balancing hydronic system, which maintains valve pressure despite fluid pressure, also garnered special attention. Finally, Clearwater Systems’ chemical-free Dolphin water treatment system, which activates natural suspended particles to treat process waters of cooling towers, heat exchangers and the like, caught the eye of one advisor from a green perspective.
