By Jack Smith, Content Manager; Amara Rozgus, Editor-in-Chief May 14, 2018

Lead Process Engineer, CRB, Carlsbad, Calif.

BS chemical/biochemical engineering, University of California, Davis

Walters is a lead process engineer at CRB specializing in biological process equipment and facility design. He oversees conceptual and detailed design projects, multidiscipline coordination, and generation of design deliverables including design narratives, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), material and energy balances, facility-arrangement drawings, process simulations, cost analysis, and specialized reports. Over the past 14 years working in pharmaceutical process and equipment design, he has gained a unique purview into aseptic equipment design, process scale-up, pilot, and manufacturing operations. His expertise includes experimental design, process characterization, equipment and process troubleshooting, and manufacturing for clinical Phase 1 through commercial production. When executing projects, Walters believes in forming real partnerships with clients. Core to a successful project is forming a successful project team, and a large part of bringing success to that team is practicing facilitation, collaboration, and shared design ownership. Beyond a dedication to design, he has a passion for mentoring. Throughout his career, he has given special attention to sharing knowledge and mentoring younger engineers; he currently leads group and one-on-one mentorship sessions with junior staff in his organization several hours each week. Outside of CRB, Walters has worked with the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers and several local universities to run interview and resume workshops and discussion panels to help better prepare upcoming graduates in marketing and conducting themselves in the professional setting. He is a Southern California native who enjoys hiking, playing board games, and spending time with his family. When not adventuring with his wife and son, he can be found playing soccer or taking in the latest science fiction movie.
