Sidari created a unique niche by integrating his engineering expertise with a specialization in water quality and Legionella control. He is dedicated to promoting building water safety and preventing disease. Sidari is even developing a Web-based application to assist engineers in gathering information about building water systems while in the field. Early in his career, Sidari studied the effectiveness of chlorine dioxide-a novel technology and an alternative to chlorine that resulted in the first field evaluation of chlorine dioxide disinfection of a hospital campus water system to control Legionella. Since his work was published in the Journal of the American Water Works Association (JAWWA) in 2004, chlorine dioxide has become an industry standard and is used worldwide to control Legionella. His recent publication (JAWWA, Oct. 2014) confirmed the findings of his original study. In 2013, Sidari was recruited to grow SPL Consulting Services. As vice president, he leads a multidisciplinary team comprising professionals from microbiology, engineering, communications, medicine, and public health. Together they assist clients from different sectors-health care, hospitality, education, and government-in controlling Legionella and managing building water quality. Sidari takes pride in giving back to the community through his engineering mentorship role to inspire middle school students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). For more than 10 years, he has volunteered and assisted classes at The Ellis School, an all-girl institution in Pittsburgh. During that time, he has been the engineering mentor for three Future City teams that have made it to the competition’s national finals held during National Engineers Week. Sidari is a self-proclaimed jack-of-all-home-improvement-trades, usually with a project going on somewhere around the house. In his time away from engineering, he enjoys working out, fishing, and spending time with his family.
