Fletcher J. Clarcq, PE, CEM, LEED AP BD+C, 39 Principal/Lead Mechanical Engineer, SmithGroupJJR, Phoenix BS Mechanical Engineering, Binghamton University

In addition to being a principal at SmithGroupJJR, Clarcq is also the engineering team leader for the health care and science/technology studios for the Phoenix office. After earning his degree in 1998, he began his career in HVAC design and now has more than 16 years of experience in the field, with 5 of them at SmithGroupJJR. Clarcq is well versed in both hydronic and air-side system design, including large-scale hot/chilled water central plants. He has designed projects that include chilled beams, displacement ventilation, underfloor air, radiant heating and cooling, and standard variable air volume systems. He is also an experienced energy modeler and has completed several final building energy models. Clarcq also helps teams with building conceptual energy modeling and computational fluid dynamics analysis for atriums and laboratories. Clarcq was a key component in the design of the University of Utah data center fuel system that supports the Tier III mission critical standby generator system. Never one to shy away from leadership responsibilities, he has led the staffing efforts for the engineering department, and provided leadership and mentorship to younger staff. Earning the respect of his peers in the company, Clarcq was promoted to the role of principal in 2014 and is on his way to becoming a leader in the firm. Clarcq has been active the past 2 years in the Alliance for Construction Excellence Mentoring Program in which he helps to teach high school students about engineering and how it relates to architectural building design. Clarcq is an avid hiker, traveler, and surfer, and makes frequent trips to Hawaii.
