Christopher F. Benson, PE, LEED AP, CEM, CxA, 33 Commissioning Authority, Total Building Commissioning, Salt Lake City BS Electrical Engineering, University of Utah

As a commissioning authority at Total Building Commissioning (TBC) in Salt Lake City, Benson is already making his mark on the building performance world. He is recognized internationally for HVAC designs that use innovative control methods to maximize comfort and minimize energy usage while addressing known communication barriers. These designs have been implemented in some of the world’s largest buildings. His peers respect him for his knowledge of building controls, his energy auditing experience, and his body of work. Benson’s unique blend of experience with engineering, controls programming, and fault detection enables him to bridge critical gaps that typically exist between design, implementation, and ongoing building performance. For new buildings, his work includes fundamental and enhanced USGBC LEED commissioning, measurement and verification, and facilitating energy efficiency utility incentives. On existing buildings, he also conducts building performance assessments (including ASHRAE energy audits) and existing building commissioning, and designs HVAC control upgrades. Before joining TBC, Benson spent 6 years building his experience in energy efficiency and controls. He sits on the ASHRAE national technical committee for control theory and is a voting member for the standard on fault detection testing methodology. Locally, he’s an active member of Tau Beta Pi and the USGBC. Benson is a cofounder of Meet an Engineer day at the University of Utah, a program started in 2009 to introduce high school students to the engineering profession. Benson also is an award-winning musician. He writes folk music, plays in a band, and has released two albums.
