Mark Koller credits his early love of math and science for leading him into a 12-year career path in engineering. After graduation, Koller went to work at a national lab in southeast Idaho where he gained experience in high-pressure steam systems and other thermal-fluid systems. It was Koller’s attraction to the Pacific Northwest that drew him to relocate to Portland, Ore., and accept an offer with Interface Engineering. Working in the HVAC field, Koller has gained most of his expertise in piping and process design and has served as project manager and lead engineer for numerous projects. In 2012, after working on the student academic center for Portland State University, Koller was awarded ASHRAE’s technology award for outstanding achievement in the application of heating, refrigerating, and air conditioning technology. The university also gained U.S. Green Building Council LEED Gold certification. Koller’s work includes more than 15 projects that have obtained LEED Gold and Platinum and net-zero status. Koller’s colleagues recognize him especially for his ability to create engineered systems by combining many different pieces of equipment in a way that is efficient and functional. His contributions to his community outside of work also reflect the skills he has obtained through his years in engineering. He is heavily involved with ASHRAE and the student activities, reviewing student design competition submittals as well as mentoring young engineers in their academic process. In addition, Koller has organized a five-part HVAC fundamentals class for local engineers with nearly 100 people registered. Koller likes to put his extra time into cycling and has covered about 10,400 miles biking to and from work over the past 8 years. Outside of cycling, Koller enjoys sailing on the local waterways for both fun and competition.
