Craig Turner has been designing electrical systems for 9 years. As an electrical engineer at Matern Professional Engineering, Turner specializes in all types of power, lighting, and low-voltage systems while implementing BIM techniques for the improvement of clients’ electrical systems. Prior to Matern, he was tasked with designing the electrical systems for a net-zero hospital in Fort Irwin, Calif. His skills quickly came to the forefront as he used innovative methods to save energy. The project included energy-efficient LED site lighting and a 2.4-MW photovoltaic array for renewable energy. The hospital became the U.S. Army’s first net-zero building and achieved U.S. Green Building Council LEED Platinum certification. Turner is described by his colleagues as an invaluable member of Matern for his creative thought process and execution of innovative energy designs. Turner uses a lifecycle process to analyze lighting throughout the firm and provides feedback to the design staff on maximizing new lighting and renewable technology on projects. Turner also has helped in transitioning Matern to a Revit-based design firm. For this process, he created a plan to help train staff and also designed tools such as a lifecycle cost analysis spreadsheet that is used throughout the company in evaluating efficient lighting alternatives. In Turner’s work to educate the firm on energy-saving models, he has led more than 20 presentations that have helped all facets of the firm’s efforts in sustainable practices. Outside of his work at Matern, Turner is passionate about his family, sports, and traveling. On occasion, he indulges in a watching a NASCAR race and cheering on his college football team. Turner and his wife, Erin, love taking their two children traveling and have visited Mexico, the Caymans, Jamaica, Haiti, and the Bahamas.
