Associate, Senior Mechanical Engineer, Energy Analyst, Interface Engineering, Portland, Ore.
Portland State University, BS Engineering; University of Kansas, BS Chemistry
Being raised in Kansas by a family of physicians, Andrew Craig’s first instinct was to choose the same path and study pre-med. It wasn’t until moving to Oregon for a job as a pediatric neurology research assistant that Craig decided to reroute his long-term career and pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. Since joining Interface Engineering in 2006, Craig has been instrumental in implementing new approaches and technologies in the company’s diverse projects. As an energy analyst and mechanical engineer, Craig performs whole building energy simulations and provides engineering support that includes load calculations (using Trace and Chvac), envelope heat transfer evaluation, and moisture migration calculations. He is recognized by his colleagues for bringing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to the firm’s portfolio. He has also performed numerous studies on natural ventilation, radiant heating and cooling, and overall environmental thermal comfort. Craig’s experience in combining energy modeling, CFD, and mechanical systems design can be seen in dozens of national and international projects. Past projects such as the Shanghai Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park in China and the Oregon Sustainability Center have earned Craig a variety of awards for innovative designs and sustainability. In conjunction with promoting and engaging others in his passion for energy efficiency, Craig has presented dozens of times to various audiences, including the local building simulation forum, engineering students at both Portland State and University of Portland, and the American Institute of Architects. Craig cites his time spent building homes with Habitat for Humanity in Oregon as his most enjoyable experience in engineering. Craig, his wife, and his daughter love camping or enjoying a night in playing a board game.
