As a child, Scott Miller’s earliest designs consisted of LEGOs, model airplanes, and mousetrap cars. The son of a mechanical engineer, he knew at a young age that he was interested in the design profession. Now, Miller has more than 14 years of design and engineering experience, totaling more than 1 million sq ft of office and high-tech academic and research facilities. He also has provided programming services for more than 500,000 sq ft of university buildings, which is the predominate focus of Miller’s portfolio. One of his most recent projects includes the 75,000-sq-ft Marquez Hall Petroleum Engineering Building located on the Colorado School of Mines campus. Miller helped design two laboratories that support special equipment and technology analyzing drilling activities and a 3-D theater to display underground environments and geological structures. He recently completed a large-scale renovation of the Worner Center located on the Colorado College campus in Colorado Springs, with a goal to reduce its overall energy consumption by 30%. To support this goal, the mechanical design included new variable air volume (VAV) kitchen exhaust hood systems to replace the original constant volume systems and provisions for a future heat reclaim system that will harvest heat rejected from the food service refrigeration equipment to preheat the domestic hot water. When he isn’t designing with LEGOs in his spare time, Miller enjoys playing Steinway grand pianos and golfing. His latest and most cherished hobby is being a dad.
