Fortmeyer is a design journalist, electrical engineer, world traveler, and sustainability consultant with the Los Angeles office of Arup, which he first joined in 1999. He is involved in master planning, building projects, advanced digital modeling analysis, sustainability framework development, and built environment research. Fortmeyer is trained as an electrical engineer, as well as in architectural theory and history, and he teaches environmental systems classes at the Southern California Institute of Architecture. He is interested in the intersection between people, architecture, and technology, and has always considered the environment foremost among his concerns. Fortmeyer worked on the design team for the U.S. Green Building Council LEED platinum TreePeople Center for Community Forestry in Los Angeles, and he volunteers with the L.A. chapter of USGBC. He has always enjoyed writing and he continues to work on design publications. While taking a break from engineering to work as a technology editor for Architectural Record, Fortmeyer helped launch GreenSource, the group’s member magazine for sustainable design, and remains a contributing editor. When Fortmeyer travels, not only does he visit natural wonders and significant architectural sites, but he often contacts local architects to learn about their work, uncover new projects, and trade war stories about working in design and construction.
