Jonathan den Hartog, PE, 31
Application Engineer – Simulation, Autodesk, Charlottesville, Va.
Dartmouth College, BA Engineering Sciences modified with Studio Art, BEng, Master of Engineering Management
With a background in aircraft research and development, den Hartog moved into the clean energy industry and is now focused on airflow and thermal simulation for building design. He enjoys participating in the innovative design work going on throughout the industry and is committed to translating these evolving needs into cutting-edge toolsets for the engineering community at large. While aircraft, biomass stoves, and ventilation simulation software serve very different needs and markets, the underlying engineering challenges for each are aimed at the common goal of maximizing energy efficiency. As an engineer with Autodesk, den Hartog is using his experience to develop and implement tools that enable firms around the world to produce high-performance building designs. He provides engineering consulting services to leading architecture and MEP firms on their most challenging projects, including clean rooms, data centers, U.S. Green Building Council LEED buildings, smoke control systems, and other ventilation and water management applications. Aside from his work in software, he also worked with colleagues to found BioLite, a clean energy technology company, and start its HomeStove project which aims to bring 1,000 clean-burning cook stoves to communities in India and Ghana in 2012. In his free time, den Hartog works to renovate his 1950s ranch house, tearing down walls, insulating the attic, refurbishing several rooms, and learning about building practices of the past.
