Douglas R. Smith, PE, LEED AP, 31

Senior Associate and Engineering Manager, Dynamix Engineering Ltd., Columbus, Ohio

The Ohio State University, BS Mechanical Engineering; Keller Graduate School, MBA

Smith began his career in the facilities and construction industry at 18 years old as an HVAC mechanic. During his college years, he joined Johnson Controls as an intern and was later offered a full-time job as systems application engineer. After seven years with the company, Smith transitioned to Dynamix as a project manager and mechanical engineer, where he impressed his colleagues as a talented and committed professional. He took night and weekend classes to attain an MBA with an emphasis in project management. Although he was eight years out of school, he quickly completed both his EIT and PE exams to obtain his PE. He was one of the first engineers at Dynamix to become a LEED AP, and he has helped his colleagues to obtain that certification. Smith recognized the need for an Owner Direct dedicated design team, which he stepped up to organize and manage. He currently manages eight other engineers and staff providing project designs for multiple-phase renovations of large healthcare facilities, including the Marietta Memorial Hospital Strecker Cancer Center in Ohio. Smith managed the MEP and technology design and construction administration for this project, which received a Gold Medal honor from The Building of America. He won the 2007 Most Valuable Person Award and the 2008 Highest Quality Award from Dynamix. His strong track record with repeat clients made him an obvious choice to represent Dynamix in many interviews and presentation teams. Smith is also very active in his community; he served as a board member and president of a local neighborhood civic association from 2004 to 2008. He is a dedicated member of his church, where he has served as a Sunday school teacher and retreat director since 1998. He married his high school sweetheart and they have three children; the family enjoys exploring science centers, zoos, and museums together.
