Ventilation Standard "How-To" Seminar Part of ASHRAE 2005


For those interested in complying with ASHRAE's 2004 ventilation standard, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality , the organization is holding a seminar, "How to Comply with ASHRAE 62.1-2004," at ASHRAE's 2005 Winter Meeting in Orlando, Fla. The seminar will take place at 10:15am on Wednesday, February 9.

"We will walk through the entire standard one section at a time to enable users to better understand the changes that have occurred and the rationale behind those changes," said Eli Howard of the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association, who will chair the seminar. "This seminar will enable a better understanding of the standard and guidance for applying it to their designs."

The 2004 standard incorporates more than 15 addenda created via continuous maintenance and also contains new requirements for building components and systems. According to Howard, the methodology for calculating ventilation rates for buildings has been fundamentally changed for the first time in 15 years.

Andy Persily, Ph.D., National Institute of Standards and Technology, will give an introduction and overview of the standard, as well as discuss the outdoor air quality and assessment, the indoor air quality procedure and appendices.

Dennis Stanke, Trane, La Crosse, Wis., will cover how to calculate the required outdoor air intake flow for constant volume reheat, single-duct VAV, and fan-powered VAV systems; and how to find default system ventilation efficiency; and calculating system ventilation efficiency using the equations from the appendix.

Additionally, Lynn Bellenger, P.E., Pathfinder Engineers LLP, Pittsford, N.Y. will discuss ventilation rate procedure, and Hoy Bohanon, P.E., Bohanon Engineering, PLLC, Clemmons, N.C., will cover equipment and building requirements.
