A joint effort by Black Hills Ventures and Phase Technologies , both of Rapid City, S.D., has led to the creation of an alternative for smaller companies and rural users for converting single-phase to three-phase power.

The Phase Perfect supplies three-phase power from a single-phase source, without the power quality problems inherent in rotary and static phase converters, or in trying to adapt a variable-frequency drive as a phase converter.

It has an input stage with electronic power factor correction, producing true, near-unity power factor. The input current is sinusoidal with very low harmonic content. The output is true sine-wave three-phase power, so no external filtering is required. And a digital signal processor monitors the process to generate balanced voltages and currents and protect the load. The Phase Perfect is fully developed, currently in use and UL-approved.
