Texas Utility To Offer Internet Access Via Power Lines
The largest utility in Texas, TXU Corp. , is planning to begin offering broadband Internet access over its power lines this year. The utility is turning to Germantown, Md.-based Current Communications for the technology underpinning the new service.
In addition to providing a new revenue potential, Current Communications' "Smart Grid" system promises to offer real-time monitoring of TXU's grid for power-quality problems, as well as automated restoration detection. The system also is said to provide automated meter reading via its online connection.
As part of the $150 million deal, TXU will join Google, Inc. , and Cincinnati-based utility Cinergy Corp. as an equity investor in Current Communications Group.
