The need for more end-user training, stronger emphasis on life-safety and greater system integration are a few of the latest security industry trends identified by a group of security professionals attending a corporate summit last month.

The gathering, sponsored by SimplexGrinell, a division of Tyco International, sought to shed light on the post-9/11 needs and concerns of the security industry.

"Life-safety has become stronger and more visible than ever," said Kevin Maynard, SimplexGrinnell's director of marketing. "When it comes to security measures, convenience has taken a back seat to life-safety concerns. Many sites have moved to implement two or three levels of identity verification."

Participants also stressed the importance of comprehensive end-user training offered at multiple levels—from the operators all the way to high-level managers.

On the topic of integration, summit attendees indicated that budgets for integrated systems were up 10% to 25%, while additional funds have been earmarked for special projects and requests for consulting have increased five-fold.
