Siemens fail-safe expansion modules for Simocode pro V – DM-F Local and DM-F Profisafe, integrates safety with plant motor management system.Siemens Simocode Pro Safety motor management solution addresses human and machine safety, as well as motor management, maintenance, and reliability. The new modules extend capabilities of Siemens Simocode Pro motor management solution (first introduced 15 years ago), helping plant operators avoid costly shutdowns in the automation process. Simocode Pro Safety addresses the concerns of human and machine safety.

The safety-oriented use of components is becoming increasingly important in process automation due to situations in which humans and the environment need to be protected by the safe shutdown of the machine or plant at any time, Siemens said.  As new regulations in safety technology are required, Siemens new fail-safe expansion modules for Simocode pro V – DM-F Local and DM-F Profisafe, safety now becomes an integrated part of a plant’s motor management system.

Humans and machines are protected by the combination of various multistage protection and monitoring functions in Simocode pro and by the safe switching off of the device.  New standards set in the implementation of this trend.  The requirements of the IEC 61508/62061 and ISO 13849-1 standards for functional safety up to SIL 3 or PL e are satisfied.  Hardware and wiring expenses are reduced, and additional outputs or peripheral devices can be omitted.

“Simocode Pro Safety provides comprehensive protection, control and communication with motor circuits and process automation, and having a solution that ensures the safe switch off of motors, fans, pumps, compressors or similar applications is integral to the entire plant environment,” said John Burns of Siemens Industry’s Industry Automation Division.

Depending on the specific requirement, two expansion modules are available and they can be easily connected to the basic Simocode pro V device.  The digital module DM-F Profisafe is used with a safe signal where the switch-off is generated in a fail-safe controller, and is transmitted to the motor management system via the Profibus/Profisafe.

For local safety applications in which the fail-safe switch-off of the motor takes place via an emergency stop, a DM-F Local module is available.

Thanks to the integrated diagnostic function, the user is provided with meaningful data outlining the status of the safety system.  Simocode Pro V feature numerous expansion possibilities, including operator panels with/without display, current and voltage measuring modules, digital modules, analog module, ground-fault module and temperature module.

Siemens said its Control Components and Systems Engineering business unit manufactures and markets products for commercial industrial applications.  Headquartered in Norcross, GA, its products include IEC/NEMA control solutions, motor control centers, solar inverter systems and technical training.  The business unit’s customers include contractors, facility managers, OEMs, electrical distributors, end users and consulting specifying engineers.
