Researchers Highlight Barriers to More Efficient Lighting Controls

A new website can help designers and contractors understand the benefits and challenges offered by some of today's more advanced lighting control systems. The site was developed by researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Lighting Research Center in Troy, N.Y., as the result of a three-year project funded by the U.

A new website can help designers and contractors understand the benefits and challenges offered by some of today's more advanced lighting control systems. The site was developed by researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Lighting Research Center in Troy, N.Y., as the result of a three-year project funded by the U.S. Dept. of Energy.

LRC investigators looked at issues users face in incorporating dimming controls, photosensors and occupancy sensors into fluorescent lighting systems. The site offers detailed reports on a range of topics, including:

  • Lamp and ballast compatibility;

  • Effects of dimming on lamp life;

  • Installation and commissioning difficulties with photo sensors and occupancy sensors;

  • Peak-load management opportunities.
