NY Housing Authority Upgrades Security of Nation’s Largest Public Housing Development

The New York Housing Authority has ordered more than 200 CCTV units for in-elevator surveillance at Queensbridge Houses in New York, the nation’s largest public housing development.

Featuring vandal-resistant construction, flush-mount design and toughened steel construction, the unit is virtually indestructible and ideally suited for what may be one of North America’s toughest housing projects. It fits into the upper corner of a room, ensuring no grip or anchor points and preventing the camera from being torn off its supporting walls. The camera is specified for a wide variety of surveillance projects for its feature set, which includes 24/7 functionality using active-infrared night vision.

The New York Housing Authority consulted David Gonzalez of system integrator Elcor International to address the issues of the project.“We specified the camera over other cameras because of its rugged design and ability to monitor an entire room, even under the camera,” said Gonzalez.“In other housing projects, existing elevator cameras are being replaced with [it].”

N.Y. Councilman Eric Gioia said, “These security cameras will make Queensbridge residents feel safer when they come home to their families at night.”Gioia added that crime in the nearby Ravenswood Houses project, which has had cameras for three years, is down almost 27% this year.

“When Mayor Bloomberg announced Operation Safe Housing over a year ago,” said Howard Marder, public information officer for the NYC Housing Authority, “he said that every New Yorker deserves to live in safe housing. He made a commitment to public safety, coupled with the support of the New York City Police Department, the Housing Authority, our residents and the courts.”The NYC Housing Authority is the largest in North America, encompassing 2,694 buildings in 345 developments.
