The latest building-system components, as featured in our May 2002 issue.

HVAC bypass system features technology that monitors drive load and speed, automatically transferring the motor from VFD control to across-the-line at full speed. Removing the drive from the circuit improves efficiency as much as 5% depending on losses within the drive itself. This 'smart' technology can also reduce full-load drive harmonics by as much as 20%. Airborne-particulate monitor can be used as a sensor that runs HVAC equipment only when needed, reducing energy costs without sacrificing worker safety. Unit provides particle concentration measurements of airborne dust, smoke, mist and fumes. (pDR-1000AN by Thermo Andersen)

Networked control panel for access-control system contains a 90-MHz processor and 16 MB of RAM that can support 250,000 cardholders. These panels feature a high speed connection, and can support magnetic stripe, Wiegand, proximity, barcode or biometric technologies. (ACURT2/4 by InfoGraphic Systems)

Electrical design software features web-collaboration tools such as the ability to publish and interact with drawings on the Internet. Designed to work as an add-on to AutoCAD, this software package allows engineers to design pneumatic-air piping controls in addition to electrical wiring. (Wiring Diagram 16.0 by VIA)

Data-center power system features a modular, patent-pending approach to power infrastructure that allows managers to build up the infrastructure as a facility grows. The three core technologies in these units are a scalable, N+1 UPS; zoned, intelligent power distribution; and a rack enclosure. (PowerStruXure by APC)

Institutional plumbing catalog features an entire line of fixtures engineered to withstand the high volume and abuse that public washrooms can endure. Included are detailed drawings and master specifications for the low-consumption product line, as well as information on ADA compliance. (Catalog 2002-S by Sloan)

Energy-management system allows electrical power users and producers to dynamically optimize their electrical systems. This PC-based application can integrate an active blueprint of the system, including system topology, engineering parameters and other information with real-time data acquired from a SCADA or EMS system. (ETAP 4.0.5 by Operation Technology, Inc.)

Switchgear performs in applications up to 34.5 kV, requiring 16-kA symmetrical short-circuit duty. Unit includes one or more 600-ampere load-interrupter switches and fault interrupters sealed in an SF6-insulated, elbow-connected tank. (System VI by S&C Electric Co.)

Air-handling units are designed to conform to the requirements of the new ASHRAE 90.1-2001 standards. Available in a variety of types and sizes, including 7.5- to 20-ton gas/electric, 7.5- to 20-ton air conditioning and 7.5- to 10-ton heat pump models. (E Series by Heil)
