The global market for light-emitting diodes, optocouplers, photodetectors and laser diodes is projected to dramatically increase from $1.97 billion in 1999, to $10.11 billion by 2006, according to the market research firm, Frost & Sullivan.

The global market for light-emitting diodes, optocouplers, photodetectors and laser diodes is projected to dramatically increase from $1.97 billion in 1999, to $10.11 billion by 2006, according to the market research firm, Frost & Sullivan.

"The market has recently experienced a tremendous boost from the introduction of blue and green LEDs. This has greatly expanded the scope for LED applications," states a recent report released by the San Antonio-based firm.

The report also notes that laser diodes have replaced LEDs as the primary light sources utilized by the fiber-optics communication market.
