High-Speed Cabling for Engineers

The new headquarters of engineering firm Brown & Caldwell in Walnut Creek, Calif., is a design-build project that boasts a sophisticated, high-speed structured cabling system.

The enhanced Category 5 system includes a one-gigabyte backbone and provides a high-speed 100-megabyte throughput to each desktop in a local area network comprised of 300 stations. In addition, cabling was designed and installed to accommodate future video requirements for Brown & Caldwell, an international firm that provides environmental engineering and consulting services to public agencies, the federal government and industry.

According to Trestand Conrique, president of San Diego-based Rancho Santa Fe Technology, the firm responsible for designing the cabling, "We employed our design-build approach to this project which enabled our team of professionals to work interactively with Brown & Caldwell at the very outset and throughout the construction process. The result is a structured cabling system that will provide the optimum performance for today, as well as flexibility to accommodate the company's growth and technology requirements in the future."
