With continued growth among the nation's industries, particularly in e-commerce and the Internet, unprecedented demands are now being placed on the nation's electrical infrastructure, notes a recent U.S. Department of Energy report.

As delineated in this report, "Powering the New Economy," the U.S. faces four main challenges in the next few years:

  • Enhancing energy security.

  • Increasing the competitiveness and reliability of the electrical grid.

  • Controlling the environmental effects of energy production.
