Chiller earns California seismic preapproval

California OSHPD announces chiller by Johnson Controls

By Johnson Controls June 29, 2011

The California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) announced that the YORK large-tonnage, water-cooled chiller manufactured by Johnson Controls earned OSHPD Special Seismic Certification Preapproval. The YORK model YMC² chiller joins the Johnson Controls list, which currently includes the YORK model YK centrifugal chillers with variable-speed drives. The OSHPD Special Seismic Preapproval certifies that approved equipment will function after an earthquake of a specified level. To earn the preapproval, several models in the product line were required to successfully demonstrate functional operation after a shaker-table test, which simulates an earthquake. YORK chillers were tested on both neoprene pads for rigid-mount applications as well as springs for above-grade applications. Although the OSHPD Special Seismic Preapproval certification is regulated by the state of California, compliance with OSHPD’s provisions also offers full compliance with the International Building Code (IBC) for seismic applications in other areas that are at a higher risk for earthquakes.
