Chicago mayor receives Global Leadership in Creating Sustainable Cities Award

The first winner of the Mayor Richard M. Daley Legacy Award for Global Leadership in Creating Sustainable Cities is … Mayor Daley. According to a Chicago Tribune report, the U.S. Green Building Council announced Tuesday that it was naming a new award for Daley and that he would be the first recipient at the annual Greenbuild conference in Chicago in November. The mayor recently announced that he would not run for re-election next year. 
"This award is in recognition of the mayor's visionary and planet-changing leadership that has created the amazing legacy of a green city," the council said.
During Daley's 21-year tenure as mayor, Chicago has planted more than 600,000 trees, constructed more than 85 miles of landscaped medians and built more than 7 million square feet of planted roofs — more than any other city in the U.S., city officials have said.
