Berkeley Lab Directs Energy-Efficiency Initiative

With the hopes of making a dent in the nation's annual $100 billion energy bill for commercial buildings, scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory are heading up a three-year public/private research initiative.

With the hopes of making a dent in the nation's annual $100 billion energy bill for commercial buildings, scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory are heading up a three-year public/private research initiative.

The program's main objective is to develop new information technologies in the following five areas to improve the design, commissioning and operation of buildings:

  • Life-cycle tools.

  • Lighting, envelopes and daylighting, including controls for lighting and ventilation systems.

  • Low-energy cooling to minimize peak and annual cooling needs in buildings.

  • Integrated commissioning and daignostics.

  • Indoor air quality.
