Twenty-one percent of architecture, engineering, and environmental consulting firms cut principals’ pay in 2008, according to a survey by ZweigWhite , an industry consulting firm. This is reflected by an average drop of $5,000 in principals’ salaries since 2007, when base salaries reached a 10-year high of $135,000.

ZweigWhite officials said they expect the trend has become more pronounced since the data were collected in January and February as the construction markets have continued to struggle.
