A search for green technology by Google

Google, Mountain View, Calif., intends to develop and help stimulate the creation of renewable energy technologies. Google intends to use solar, geothermal and wind power, aimed at reducing energy costs for running data centers, will help fight climate change. Based out of Google’s research and development group, the RE& C project–renewable energy cheaper than coal–will hire engineers and energy experts to advise the company on energy efficiency policies, technologies and environmentally friendly power sources.

Google’s goal is the production of one gigawatt of renewable energy, enough to power the city of San Francisco, in a cheaper way than coal-generated electricity. The philanthropic for-profit subsidiary, Google.org, will invest in energy start-up companies with scalable technologies. eSolar, Pasadena, Calif., uses thousands of small mirrors to concentrate sunlight and generate steam that powers electric generators is an example of the type of company Google is searching for. Another company is Makani Power, Alameda, Calif., which develops wind turbines that run on powerful winds at high altitudes and help generate electricity.
