In 2013, Jeffrey Horrocks became one of the youngest partners in the 50-year history of SMS Engineering. Horrocks’ cross-training in energy management and LEED accreditation along with mechanical engineering and business administration makes him a multifaceted and sought-out member at SMS. For the University of Manitoba‘s Taché Hall, Horrocks faced a wide range of challenges in preparing the site around the relocation of services to the main campus. With careful planning, Horrocks and his team were able to reroute services through adjacent buildings without disrupting their occupants. Horrocks led his team in a unique redesign of the 100-year-old building that successfully enabled fan coils to run between the roof and ductwork to snake through the web of the trusses and beams. Taché Hall also incorporates a number of energy-saving features such as heat recovery, efficient variable refrigerant volume system, and variable flow to the concert hall when constant volume isn’t required for acoustics during performances. In Horrocks’ 10 years of experience producing innovative designs, he has participated in the completion of more than 100 projects in the commercial, education, and health care sectors. Horrocks represents the firm as chair of the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies institutional committee and also serves as a mentor both in the classroom and on site with the students of the University of Manitoba. As an avid hockey player, sports is a big part of Horrocks’ life. Apart from hockey and competing in sprint triathlons, he also celebrates his love of sports by taking his nearly 1-year-old son to weekly swimming lessons.
