Early in his career, Schaffer realized his desire for challenging and unique projects to develop his structural engineering capabilities. He has extensive knowledge in steel, timber, light-gage metal, and concrete design. His project experience includes the healthcare, education, corporate, and residential markets. At Bala Consulting Engineers, he has designed new corporate headquarters buildings for many global clients, education facilities for some of the largest universities in the region, and more than 15 “Luckey Climber” structures in children’s museums. He especially appreciates that his own children can play on a structure he helped design and support at the Delaware Children’s Museum, a tension structure supported by cantilevered perimeter posts and called the Stratosphere. Schaffer is well-known and respected for his attention to detail, thorough technical skill, and excellence as a communicator and listener. Sharing his love of structural engineering is very important to Schaffer, and he mentors and develops young engineers within and beyond his firm. He is an active member of his church and a volunteer for the Upward Sports youth basketball program. He and his wife Becky have three daughters They are an active family, and together they enjoy hiking, camping, exploring, and geocaching. Schaffer is also a certified private pilot who flies a Cessna 172 and an aerobatic Citabria.
