The Fieldbus Foundation held its 2011 General Assembly March 9-10 in Mumbai, India. The key automation industry event attracted leading suppliers and end users of Foundation fieldbus. It was the largest annual gathering in Fieldbus Foundation history. Nearly 500 attendees, including leading suppliers and end users of FOUNDATION fieldbus, took part in the event, held March 9-10 at the JW Marriott Hotel Mumbai.

The 2011 General Assembly, themed, “Achieving Operational Excellence with Foundation Technology,” included a comprehensive, end user-oriented agenda consisting of fieldbus project case studies and tabletop exhibitions. The program included the latest Foundation fieldbus developments and technical presentations by prominent fieldbus end users. The Fieldbus Foundation also held its annual business meeting.

The keynote speaker for the General Assembly was Mr. P Mahajan, Technical Director, Engineers India Limited (EIL). Mr. Mahajan joined EIL in 1982 in its Engineering Division (Instrumentation and Control) and subsequently worked in the company’s project and technical divisions. He holds a degree in Electronics and Electrical Communication from Punjab Engineering College, Punjab University, Chandigarh, India.

Mr. Mahajanstarted his career with India’s Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) as a scientific officer.  During his tenure in the DAE, he was primarily responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction and maintenance of instrumentation and control systems for heavy water projects. Mr. Mahajan introduced the concept of electronic instrumentation and intrinsically-safe systems in electrically hazardous plants to India in 1974.

According to Fieldbus Foundation President and CEO Rich Timoney, Mumbai was selected as the site of this year's General Assembly, due to its status as one of the world’s fastest growing industrial regions, and the overwhelming demand for Foundation technology within the area.

Timoney said that the 2011 General Assembly program highlighted advantages of Foundation fieldbus as a world-class solution for improving plant asset management, reliability, and economic performance. "Our technology is advancing to meet the needs of the process industries, including major developments such as Foundation for Safety Instrumented Functions (FF-SIF), control in the field, field diagnostics and wireless," Timoney said.
