There is a unique component to Affleck’s technique for providing high-quality work on his most complex projects: pizza. As a project manager for many military or federal government facilities, he hosts weekend or late-night “red lining parties” with the representatives of all the internal disciplines to ensure stringent requirements are met. For instance, Affleck has worked on more than 20 projects for the Hill Air Force Base, many of which were design-build. These gatherings are the reason for the high level of internal coordination and Affleck’s ability to deliver the best value to his clients. Because of his work with federal agencies, he has become familiar with requirements for secure facilities such as Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs) and Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communications System (JWICS) communications cabling. Affleck’s colleagues laud him for his diligence and dedication to the details. His contributions have helped design teams to win several accolades, including a Design Merit Award for the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Propellant Analysis Complex at Hill Air Force Base, presented by the Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment (AFCEE). He is constantly adding to his skill set and refreshing his knowledge by taking and teaching classes. He taught the lighting economics portion of the Illuminating Engineering Society lighting fundamentals course and was a substitute instructor at Salt Lake Community College. Affleck is dedicated to public safety as an engineer and as a citizen. He volunteers as a block captain with a neighborhood emergency preparedness group. He is also active at church; he often performs in church plays and musicals, plays the cello or guitar for church functions, and teaches a primary class of eight- and nine-year-olds. At home, Affleck enjoys cooking an eclectic mix of cuisines; experimentation is a key to his cooking, and his wife and children are always willing to try his newest meal.
