Networking with the Giants

During the Greenbuild 2010 Conference in Chicago, CFE Media and the Consulting-Specifying Engineer staff joined a room full of the engineers to discuss the state of green buildings in the U.S. and how engineers can continue to help.

At the Chicago Firehouse restaurant at 1401 S. Michigan Avenue, CFE Media provided an opportunity for engineers to network with representatives from some of the most prominent engineering firms in the nation after attending Greenbuild.

Mike Walters, PE, LEED AP from AEI gave a short presentation on sustainable design initiatives. All 2010 MEP GIANTS received an award plaque honoring their achievements during this event.

As AEI's Sustainable Market leader, Mike Walters brings insight and innovation on planning and design issues to public, private, and government projects worldwide. He continues to seek new ways to advance stewardship of the natural world in the built environment through professional practice, education, and speaking engagements.

A previous ASHRAE, GreenBuild, and Labs21 speaker, Mr. Walters is adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he teaches the Sustainable Building Design and LEED course for the College of Engineering. He guided the National Institutes of Health's Sustainable Design Initiative, plotting a concurrent reduction of annual energy consumption during the extensive expansion of the Institute's laboratory and medical research campus, and led the design of energy efficiency strategies for the five-million square foot LEED Platinum King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia.

He planned the UNC-Chapel Hill demand side energy reduction program, which included building audits, calibrated energy modeling, and statistical methods for prioritization of cross-campus measures. Mr. Walters directed Cornell University's first step in executing the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, a Climate Action Plan that will eliminate roughly 320 kilo-tons of greenhouse gas emissions and ultimately achieve carbon neutrality.

Walters directed sustainable design measures for the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery project, informed by the sustainable pre-design methodology he developed as the core of AEI's Sustainability 2.0 consulting services.
