Kevin Mussler, PE, LEED AP, 37

Vice President and Managing Partner, CMTA, Lexington, Ky.

University of Kentucky, BS Mechanical Engineering

One element stands out in all aspects of Mussler’s life: passion. He applies boundless energy to all endeavors, whether it’s his work, clients, employees, family, or University of Kentucky sports. This was especially apparent when he became managing partner of CMTA’s Lexington office in 2008. The office doubled its revenues and increased staff by 50% with Mussler in charge. His clients praise him for his infectious enthusiasm and the way he energizes his team and those around him. He helped the firm win a $200 million contract for the largest healthcare renovation in the region. He is known for his innovation, sustainable solutions, and determination to go beyond everyone’s expectations, especially in client service. Mussler was project manager for the Digital Village, the electrical engineering and computer science building of University of Kentucky, his alma mater. The building is tied to the university’s steam system and houses a super computer room that requires constant cooling. To meet LEED standards, Mussler’s team developed a way to use waste heat from the computer cooling systems to heat the building. Since then, he has completed 21 additional projects for the University of Kentucky, totaling more than $75 million. Mussler is dedicated to nurturing young engineers through CMTA’s co-op program with his alma mater; he also sits on the university’s Power and Energy Institute advisory board. He believes that sustainable design is more than a marketing tool. He has given various educational presentations about high-performance buildings and served as a board member of the USGBC Kentucky chapter. During the football season, Mussler combines his passion for the University of Kentucky with his love of cooking in his self-made tailgating trailer, complete with a big-screen TV. He brings that same enthusiasm to the soccer field as a coach for his daughters Lilly, 8, and Abby, 5.
