Consulting-Specifying Engineer’s Top 5 most read articles online, for October 3-9, covered the 2016 MEP Giants, 40 Under 40, designing liquid-immersion cooling systems, applying NFPA 75 in data centers, and a case study about roof-mounted PV systems. Link to each article below.

1. 2016 MEP Giants

The MEP Giants program lists the top 100 mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), and fire protection engineering firms in the United States. The in-depth analysis of these firms appears in the August issue and reveals what’s going on in the industry and how it has changed over the past few years.

2. 40 Under 40 program

Consulting-Specifying Engineer magazine is dedicated to encouraging and recognizing the most talented young individuals in the engineering community supporting the building industry. We want to shape the future of young engineers, and will do so by recognizing and encouraging them through mentoring articles in the magazine, young engineer networking events, and the 40 Under 40 program.

3. Designing with liquid-immersion cooling systems

In simple thermodynamic terms, heat transfer is the exchange of thermal energy from a system at a high temperature to one at lower temperature. In a data center, the information technology equipment (ITE) is the system at the higher temperature.

4. Applying NFPA 75 in data centers

NFPA 75: Standard for the Fire Protection of Information Technology (IT) Equipment covers the requirements for the protection of IT equipment from fire damage. The current edition (2013) has not been adopted by all jurisdictions; however, fire protection engineers should be well aware of its requirements because of the large number of IT facilities and data centers.

5. Case study: Roof-mounted PV system

Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas has the biggest roof-mount solar photovoltaic (PV) array (as of July 2016) in the U.S., with a 6.4-MW dc-rated system on a single roof. It is also the second-largest roof-mount solar system in the world.
