Project name: Potomac Yards Renaissance and Residence Inn Hotel

Location: Arlington, Va.

Firm name: Jordan and Skala Engineers

Project type, building type: New construction, hotel

Project duration: 2 years

Project completion date: 2009

Project budget for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection engineering only: $16 million

Engineering challenges

The primary challenge of the project was marrying the requirements from the two brands of hotels that occupy the facility. The project comprises a full-service hotel on one side and an extended-stay hotel on the other, joined together by a common parking deck.

Solutions

The engineering team at Jordan and Skala met regularly with representatives from both brands to ensure that the systems being designed met the needs of both—not too much for the extended stay hotel while not diminishing the full-service hotel.
