The average annual growth rate for cable consumption will increase 10 percent over the next five years, reaching $39.4 billion by 2005, according to projections made by ElectroniCast Corporation, a telecommunications market research firm based in San Mateo, Calif.
"The capacity demand explosion is fueling significant increases in fiber production capacity," said ElectroniCast Senior Analyst, Saba Hailu.
Accounting for 22 percent of the $24.4 billion of worldwide cable consumption in 2000 was the United States. By 2010, ElectroniCast researchers project that dollars spent on cable in the U.S. will almost double, primarily driven by the proliferation of private local-area-network/wide-area-network and local loop networks.
