Promoting the use of ammonia as a refrigerant in air conditioning and refrigeration applications, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) has released a refrigeration position document.

"We have a significant role to play in encouraging the proper and safe use of ammonia in policy, research, standards, codes and guidelines, technology and education," said ASHRAE President William Coad.

The document commits ASHRAE to:

  • Promote authoritative information about ammonia through seminars and publications.

  • Research handling, application, operation, control of emissions and new technology, as it relates to ammonia.

  • Maintain and develop standards and guidelines for practical and safe applications of ammonia in refrigeration systems.

  • Offer programs and publications addressing innovative designs and applications of ammonia refrigeration.

  • Advise government and code officials regarding ammonia.
