This presentation is designed to educate consulting specifying engineers regarding the various factors that influence a generator set’s ratings, and how familiarity with these factors can contribute to more economical and reliable facility designs. The presenter will discuss ISO standards for generator sets rated for use in standby, prime and continuous power applications. The speaker will consider flexibilities that generator set manufacturers use when rating their products—such as net power output vs gross power output—and their implications in terms of generator performance. 

During this webcast, the presenter will compare various starting methods including across the line start and soft start solutions. EPA exhaust emission requirements will be examined, and the presenter will compare and contrast their implications in emergency, non-emergency and mobile applications. Specific industry ratings, such as data centers, will be reviewed and considered, including the implications when specifying generator sets.

Nicholas Paolo, PE is a Regional Sales Engineer for MTU Onsite Energy, a Rolls-Royce Power Systems brand. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, an MBA from Minnesota State University and also a Professional Engineering License. Paolo has a background in application engineering at MTU Onsite Energy designing generator sets up to 3250 kWe, recently transitioning into sales engineering, assisting distributors in the United States and Canada on custom power generation projects. He is an active member of IEEE, ASME, MNSPE, AFCOM, 7x24 and EGSA.
