UL acquires photometric testing service company
Product safety certification company Underwriters Laboratories has expanded its photometric testing capability for solid state lighting.
Safety and testing services company Underwriters Laboratories (UL) announced that it acquired Lighting Sciences Inc. (LSI), a provider of photometric testing services, test equipment, and advisory services in support of the solid state lighting (SSL) market. LSI will become part of UL's Verification Services business, which provides performance testing, inspection, and auditing for product manufacturers and retailers.
"The lighting industry is undergoing a technology transformation. Global regulators are placing a much greater focus on the need to develop safe and energy efficient lighting products like LED,” said Keith Williams, president and CEO of UL.
He said that the acquisition would “allow the lighting industry to come to a single organization for testing and certification of their products to the applicable safety and energy efficiency standards."
LSI will help increase UL’s photometric testing capability ahead of the impending shift to SSL (LED) technologies and expand its capacity and capabilities in energy efficiency and Energy Star testing. Additionally, this acquisition provides UL with new ways to serve the global lighting marketplace through test equipment and advisory services.
