At a joint press conference in January, Banner Engineering Corp . (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL, Research Triangle Park, N.C.) announced that Banner's new Mini-Screen Electronic Safety Light Screen System is the first product to receive the new UL 1998 certificate for a safety light curtain. The system generates a screen of infrared beams to shield personnel from hazardous areas.

Ci Technologies (Rochester, N.Y.) will integrate its Citect for Windows industrial automation software with ABB Industrial Systems ' (West Henrietta, N.Y.)AdvaBatch software for batch management and execution in an intuitive graphical package, and will introduce it in a series of seminars in the U.S. and Canada.

Comdale Technologies Inc. (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) recently signed OEM agreements with Wonderware Inc. (Irvine, Calif.) and Intellution Inc. (Norwood, Mass.). Comdale will incorporate Wonderware's InTouch software and Intellution's FIX software with its SmartWorX products for Microsoft Windows NT. SmartWorX includes Alarm Manager, Knowledge Developer, and Expert Optimizer.

Honeywell-Measurex Corp. (Cupertino, Calif.) recently introduced the SpectraFoil full sheet measurement sensor for the wet end of paper machines and the FullWeb Advanced Systems Technology control package. The SpectraFoil sensor provides cross direction and machine direction water weight measurements.

Hyprotech (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) has expanded its solutions capability by acquiring intellectual property rights to STX and ACX software packages from Heat Transfer Consultants (Pleasant Hill, Calif.). Hyprotech will assume ownership of ongoing development, marketing, and support of these heat exchanger design and rating programs.

Shell U.K. Exploration and Production (Shell Expro, Aberdeen, Scotland) saved more than $1.6 million at its Brent Field facility two months after implementing Gensym Corp. 's (Cambridge, Mass.) G2 software forecasting system. One of the North Sea's largest oil and gas producers, Shell Expro needed to improve production, and worked with Logica, a Gensym Solution partner, to develop an integrated production simulation environment.

To help developers save on network setup time, Think & Do Software (Cumming, Ga.), a PLCDirect federation company, has added drivers for Profibus and Seriplex networks that give developers point-and-click methods for quickly associating tag names with physical I/O points.

To secure a key technology for accessing CAD data, Visio Corp. (Seattle, Wa.) announced Jan. 23 that it has acquired programming toolkit maker MarComp Inc. for an undisclosed number of shares of unregistered Visio common stock. Similarly, Visio also recently acquired InfoModelers Inc. a database, data warehouse visual design, access and query tools manufacturer, also in exchange for Visio stock.

Wind River Systems Inc. (Alameda, Calif.), a supplier of embedded operating systems and development tools, has announced that its Tornado for Java development environment has passed tests for Sun Microsystems' Java Compatibility, and met the specifications of the fully compliant Java standard.

To bring hardware and software together in one package, Wonderware Corp. (Irvine, Calif.) and Phoenix Contact (Blomberg, Germany) have joined forces to market Wonderware's FactorySuite automation software with Phoenix Contact's Interbus-based communication and controller hardware.
