CannonDesign has been elected to receive the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania (ESWP’s) 2014 “Project of the Year” award in the Commercial category for the design of Allegheny Health Network’s Health + Wellness Pavilion.

Allegheny Health Network (AHN) selected CannonDesign to design and build the Health + Wellness Pavilion, a three-story 173,000 sf mixed-use medical facility located on a 16-acre site in Wexford, PA. The building contains a variety of outpatient services, including Ambulatory Surgery, Medical and Radiation Oncology, Radiology, Physical and Occupational Therapy, Women’s Center, Lab, Family and Specialty Physician Practices.

Additionally, there are amenities such as a café, children’s playroom and large courtyard and walking trails to enhance the visitor experience. As the entire building’s first floor is raised up on stilts, there are over 100 covered parking spaces to shield visitors from inclement weather.

The original concept behind the pavilion was to bring a range of outpatient services into the community on a level of quality and sophistication normally found only in a hospital. Not only convenient, but because this would be a ‘one stop shop’ with all of the services under one roof, the continuity of care across specialties should be far more seamless and integrated than when transitioning between physically separate facilities. This building is the embodiment of patient-centered care.

In view of the significant role played by CannonDesign as the design-builder, the ESWP will present an award to the firm at the ESWP Annual Banquet Feb. 18 at the Westin Convention Center in Pittsburgh.

“Our integrated process allowed us to take on this very challenging and complex building project,” said Robert J. Ward, an engineering leader at CannonDesign. “It is with tremendous pride we accept this recognition from the ESWP.”

As an integrated design firm with Design-Led, Design-Build capabilities, CannonDesign streamlined administrative activities such as RFIs, submittals and approval processes by reducing time-consuming redundancies between architect, design-builder and trade contractors. This ultimately provided the AHN with valuable time savings, as the facility was designed and constructed in just 22 months.

THE ESWP looks to recognize an exemplary engineer and outstanding project from the Western Pennsylvania region each year. The awards highlight the important contribution engineers make to our society and encourage those in the field to excel at their work. More information on ESWP at https://www.eswp.com
