Project Profile: King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST)

Firm name: Vanderweil Engineers

Project building name and location: King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Rabigh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Type of building and type of project: University or College, New Construction

Project completion date and project duration: September 2009

Engineering challenges and solutions:

We developed a mechanical concept where we "pre-cooled and filtered" the outside air to the buildings.in essence, we “wrung out the moisture and sand" before the raw outside air was treated by the Air handling units serving the facilities. This "pre-treatment' successfully stabilized the supply airflow serving the occupants of the facility.

Solutions to the Above Challenges

We developed a mechanical and electrical distribution network which supplied/exhausted airflow above the laboratories on the perimeter to allow for a "high bay" center lab area for future lab fit-outs, this will allow for all types of research in the future.
