Mr. Kern is a Vice President at Environmental Systems Design (ESD), Chicago, where he has led the Human Resources (HR) team for the past nine years. In his 18 years as an accomplished HR leader, he has built start-up ventures through aggressive growth plans, and has elevated ESD into a position of extraordinary success though highly effective recruitment and retention initiatives. Mr. Kern is passionate about developing engineers throughout their ESD careers with comprehensive and customized mentoring and training opportunities. He contributes to student development through his involvement locally with the Chicago Engineers Foundation, and globally with the organization Room to Read. Mr. Kern holds a JD from Loyola University of Chicago and a bachelor’s degree from Boston College.

Ms. Sidebottom is the owner of AMK LLC, Louisville, Ky., a management and marketing consulting firm that provides market development and growth expertise to small and medium-sized firms. She has 20 years of management and leadership experience in both consulting engineering and Fortune 100 organizations. Ms. Sidebottom is a graduate of the University of Maryland and has completed leadership development programs at The Center for Creative Leadership and UTC/Carrier.

Dr. Smith has been an expert in the field of adult education, soft-skills training, and research design for more than two decades. As an adult educator, she has a diverse background in custom training program development and assessment that includes leading instructional design teams, subject matter experts, and business professionals from conceptualization, through implementation, to evaluation in a variety of technical and academic fields.
Dr. Smith is an expert in live and Web-based training venues for individuals and groups. Clients include engineering and technical firms, non-profits, international government organizations, government agencies, and public school districts.
Dr. Smith is a member of the Career Smart team of columnists for Consulting-Specifying Engineer magazine. She also has published feature articles for consulting engineers on the topics of mentoring and training.
Mark A. Gelfo, PE, LEED AP BD+C, LEED AP O+M, CxA

Mr. Gelfo has more than 18 years of experience in the field of electrical engineering. Mr. Gelfo has a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering from Penn State University, and specializes in hospital and health care facility design. Since joining TLC in 1993, Mr. Gelfo became a Principal in 1999, was promoted to Division Director of TLC’s Jacksonville Office in 2002 and in 2007 was appointed to TLC’s Board of Directors.
Mr. Gelfo is versed in all aspects of electrical engineering design including emergency power generation, power distribution, short circuit calculation, over-current device coordination studies, lightning protection, fire alarm, nurse call, communication systems, as well as surveys of existing facilities for code compliance. He is a registered professional engineer in several states, a LEED Accredited Professional for Building Design + Construction and Operations + Maintenance, and an ACG Certified Commissioning Authority.
Mr. Gelfo also serves on the Board of Directors of the USGBC North Florida Chapter and the AABC Commissioning Group.
