Top Pollution Technologies

-- Consulting-Specifying Engineer, 3/1/2001

According to this month's M/E Roundtable participants, the following design approaches and technologies should play an increasingly important role in reducing pollution in commercial and industrial facilities. The items listed run the gamut from the mundane to the sublime.

  1. Membrane-separation technology for the reclamation of water, raw materials and process chemicals.
  2. Bioremediation using microorganisms such as anaerobic bacteria for potentially harmful contaminant spills and groundwater remediation.
  3. Bypass filtration for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems.
  4. Membrane bioreactors for use in solids separation.
  5. Total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) based on water-quality standards to establish equitable waste-load allocations for industrial waste discharge.
  6. Conservation awareness training for users of electrical devices.
  7. Ride sharing!
