Notes from ASHRAE Summer Meeting in Long Beach, Calif.

Staff -- Consulting-Specifying Engineer, 7/1/2007

Energy efficiency and sustainability are central topics at ASHRAE meetings. But with general public concern and awareness of these issues continuing to grow, it is the ASHRAE leadership's goal to be in the forefront on these topics. The topic dominated the ASHRAE annual meeting held in Long Beach, Calif., in June.

Kent W. Peterson, P.E. FASHRAE, in his inaugural presentation as 2007-08 ASHRAE President, “Greater Efficiency Today, Blue Skies Tomorrow,” said, “ASHRAE understands the importance and need for action and we are becoming an engine for positive change. We have publicly stated our vision to continually improve building energy performance with the ultimate goal of market-viable net-zero-energy buildings by the year 2030.”

Of special note at this year's meeting is the Distinguished 50-Year Member Award, given to persons who have been a member of the ASHRAE for 50 years and have performed outstanding service to the society. Twelve individuals received the award this year:

  • William Barbier, P.E., fellow ASHRAE, life member, president, Concept Technology Inc., Hazelwood, Mo.

  • David N. McMinn, life member, Santa Rosa, Calif.
  • Presidential member Donald G. Rich, fellow ASHRAE, life Member, Fayetteville, N.Y.
  • Robert T. Tamblyn, P.Eng., fellow ASHRAE, life member, principal, Tamblyn Consulting Services, North York, Ontario, Canada
  • Eugene L. Valerio, life member, principal, Technical Marketing Services, Coos Bay, Ore.
