Cabling Infrastructure Supports Mission-Critical Center

Staff -- Consulting-Specifying Engineer, 11/1/2000

When ViaSat, Inc., planned its new headquarters in Carlsbad, Calif., the company-which designs and produces digital communication products-needed a strong telecommunications infrastructure to support its needs.

According to ViaSat network administrator Brent Barker, the company was looking for a cabling system that could offer maximum transmission efficiency, easy installation and easy management.

In addition to corporate and administrative offices, the firm's new campus houses manufacturing and assembly operations, as well as a mission-critical network operations center.

The firm selected a high-performance horizontal cabling system that fully supports 100Base-T standards and is also optimized for Gigabit Ethernet. The system complements a fiber-optic local-area network (LAN) backbone that links all three of the two-story buildings on the campus. The LAN currently supports voice and data transmissions, and the company plans to add video capabilities later on.

In addition to the main corporate network, ViaSat has also installed a separate intra-lab network that links various research and testing facilities within each of the buildings.

The system selected consists of an integrated infrastructure of horizontal cable, patch cords, terminal blocks, jacks and patch panels.
