Analysts Targeting Fuel Cell, UPS Stocks

By Staff -- Consulting-Specifying Engineer, 12/1/2003

Analysts and investors are targeting advanced-technology fuel-cell and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) manufacturers as potential winners in the speculative marketplace. By late September, prices for stock issued by a number of these manufactured had doubled or tripled over their levels of the previous six months.

In a late September edition of msn.com, business writer Robert Walberg noted that current political and economic factors give investors in this sector reason for optimism. He outlined the potential advantages mass-produced fuel cells could offer—including reductions in fossil-fuel dependency and emissions—as additional reasons behind the run up in that area.

Also benefiting from interest in alternative energy approaches, according to Walberg, are makers of flywheel UPS systems, microturbines, and solar- and wind-based generating equipment.

To illustrate the potential impact these new products could have in the energy marketplace, Walberg also mentioned the growing number of established manufacturers now exploring these technologies, either through their own efforts or in partnership with smaller companies. Such leaders include Caterpillar, Ingersoll-Rand, United Technologies and General Electric.

On an added note, investment in the harmonic industry looks promising these days. Investors interested in this sector can consult a recently published benchmark report for the harmonic filtering industry, including valuable data for market size, suppliers, influence of leading technologies and sales data.

Over 50 industry suppliers are identified along with their product offerings, helping those interested understand who the players are and what their current offerings include. The information could help decision makers recognize trends, and key statistics help compare company performances against industry averages.
