Staff -- Consulting-Specifying Engineer, 4/1/2003

Lightfair Institute is an educational forum being launched at this year's Lightfair International conference and tradeshow, May 6 through May 8 at the Javits Convention Center in New York City. The Institute's workshops and seminars will be held before the show on May 3-5. Most are authorized for continuing education credit.

The 1.9-million-lb. removable spillway weir recently attached to the Lower Granite Lock and Dam on the Snake River in Washington state was named the year's best engineering achievement by the American Council of Engineers. The project was chosen over a number of other heavyweight contenders, such as Boston's Bunker Hill Bridge, New York's WTC cleanup and the Milwaukee Art Museum.

The Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute has recently revised two of its standards—ARI Standard 470-2002, "Desuperheater/Water Heater," and 480-2001, "Remote Type Refrigerants-Cooled Liquid Coolers." Both are available for free download.

The engineering world lost two venerable leaders in March. Bernard Greenheck, co-founder of Greenheck Fan Corp., Schofield, Wis., died at age 85; and Lee Martin, former president, CEO and chairman of the board at NIBCO Inc., Elkhart, Ind., died at 83.
