Where Design-Build Dominates

Staff -- Consulting-Specifying Engineer, 10/1/2002

Health-care facilities, commercial buildings, hotels and stadiums appear to be the hottest markets for design-build delivery, according to a recent survey conducted by the Natick, Mass.-based market research firm ZweigWhite.

Compared to the results of a 1997 survey, the amount of design-build projects for the medical facilities market jumped from 15% to 46% this year, hotel design-build projects increased from 18% to 44%, the sports and recreation market saw dramatic growth from 6% to 38%, and commercial design-build projects went from 37% to 45%.

Although close to half of the design-consulting, design-build and construction firms who responded to ZweigWhite's 2002 survey indicated that they are still experiencing barriers to utilizing design-build, this figure is down from 76% in 1997.

This year's survey also showed that it is considerably easier to execute these projects in the private sector, as 30% of firms indicated that procurement laws in their state often inhibit them from public sector design-build work.
